Milk, Money, and Minutes

The Milk Bank is grateful for all the ways our community supports our efforts to promote the safe use of human milk.

Bottled-Milk-0058Mother’s Milk is a Gift Like No Other

There is not greater gift to a family of a fragile NICU baby than Donor Milk. Milk donations are considered medicinal and milk donors considered life savers.

4 Steps to Donation:

Step 1

Complete a 10-15 minute phone screening with our Donor Mother Coordinator.

Step 2

Complete and return an informational packet, including signed forms from your Pediatrician and Obstitrician.

Step 3

The Milk Bank will arrange for you to get your blood drawn and cover all costs.

Step 4

When we receive your paperwork and lab results, our Clinical Coordinator will review the information and approve you for donation.

Getting The Blood Test

Your milk will be prescribed to preterm and critically ill babies. To provide the safest milk possible, we require all donor moms to complete a blood test to screen for harmful viruses. The Milk Bank covers all costs associated with the blood screening. We will be testing for HIV I&II, Syphilis, HTLV I&II (Human T- Lymphotrophic Virus) and Hepatitis B&C.

Our staff will arranged for you to have your blood drawn at one of our contracted partners after you complete your initial pre-screening.

Your Money Goes a Long Way

As a community supported nonprofit organization, The Milk Bank strives to be good stewards of the generous donations from individual and philanthropic contributors. We spend the large majority of our resources on processing and distributing donor human milk to premature and ill infants in need. That is our mission.

For some, mother’s milk is a gift like no other.

Your Time Makes a Difference

Volunteers are vital to the continued growth of The Milk Bank!

We rely upon our generous volunteer staff throughout the year to help us share the gift of mothers’ milk. We currently have needs in the following areas:

1. Assistant Pasteurization Tech – Assist our staff in pooling, pasteurizing, and analyzing donor human milk. In this hands-on experience, volunteers will learn about the processes we use to ensure the safety and quality of our milk. No training or fancy credentials required – we will provide the training you need.

2. Outreach Specialist – As part of our outreach initiatives, we participate in community events throughout the year to support breastfeeding and raise awareness about The Milk Bank. Outreach specialist volunteers help us staff tables and distribute information.

3. Office Helper – We have a small staff, so we can always use help with normal office duties such as data entry, filing, and organization. It may not be the most glamorous activity, but it helps.

4. Special Projects – Do you have a special talent or skill? Do you want to donate your time or services to The Milk Bank? We are always open to suggestions.
