We are proud to announce the addition of FREE Lactation Services to our programs starting in Spring of 2016.
The 2014 CDC Breastfeeding report card shows Indiana behind the national average for both the initiation of breastfeeding and exclusively breastfeeding at three months. With 74.1 percent of mothers initiating breastfeeding, many babies are getting a good start. However, exclusive breastfeeding drops to 35.7 percent at three months, demonstrating a sharp decline in breastfeeding rates after mom and baby are discharged from the hospital. There is a need for increased community support for breastfeeding mothers after they leave the hospital. Lactation support is effective when it is offered directly within communities at locations easily accessible to new mothers.
The Milk Bank wants to be a part of the solution.
In addition to providing Pasteurized Donor Human Milk to premature infants, The Milk Bank is initiating a community lactation support program. Mothers who are experiencing difficulties or have concerns with breastfeeding are invited to schedule an appointment with our Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). The Milk Bank will be offering weight checks and counseling with Sarah Long, IBCLC in a private nursing room in our new location at 62nd & Binford Boulevard in Indianapolis.
"I am so excited to provide local moms this much needed service" -Sarah Long, IBCLC
