Why I Purchased The Milk Bank License Plate

Did you know The Milk Bank has a specialty license plate with the Indiana BMV? Every plate sold helps drive awareness for the lifesaving benefits of human donor milk. Each plate also provides a direct donation to The Milk Bank, which can provide up to 15 feedings of safe donor milk to critically ill babies in the NICU.

To keep our plate on the road, we must have 500 people purchase the license plate. One of our plate owners is TaKiesha Smith, a mom of two with a great passion for birth, education and advocacy. She’s a certified doula, certified lactation counselor, and owner of A Caring Doula, which provides birthing, lactation, and training services.

Here’s TaKiesha’s story on why she purchased her The Milk Bank Saving Infant Lives license plate, shared in her own words:

“I’m really grateful for The Milk Bank and the work they do. As a doula and lactation professional, I get to stand beside families during some of their most vulnerable moments and see firsthand how powerful it is to have a source of support that meets families where they are.

I see how much it matters for families to have steady support during those early days. Some babies need donor milk right away to stay stable and growing. Some birthing people are waiting for their milk to come in after a tough birth, or they’re having a hard time getting a supply started.

I’ve watched donor milk give families a sense of relief. It gives them time. It lets them breathe while their bodies catch up. It keeps human milk feeding an option for parents who want it. Seeing that up close makes me appreciate The Milk Bank even more. Their work touches babies, parents, and everyone who shows up to care for them.

This is exactly why I purchased my The Milk Bank plate and why I’m proud to support an organization that makes such a real difference. I get to witness the impact in my work every day, and it means a lot to stand behind something that genuinely helps families.”
