The Milk Bank and Bonnie Knows Breast Hosting Milk Donor Drive in Louisville During World Breastfeeding Week

The Milk Bank must screen more than 150 new milk donors each month to keep up with the need for safe donor milk in the NICU.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. July 22, 2025 – Every year, The Milk Bank must screen more than 1,800 milk donors to keep up with the need for pasteurized human milk in the NICU. To help meet this need, The Milk Bank is hosting a Milk Donor Drive in partnership with Bonnie Knows Breast, a Louisville-based lactation practice that hosts a Milk Depot, a community-based milk drop-off location for approved donors of The Milk Bank.

The Milk Donor Drive is happening during World Breastfeeding Week, a globally recognized campaign to generate public awareness and support for breastfeeding. Community members are encouraged to drop by the Bonnie Knows Breast office and Milk Depot at 6011 Brownsboro Park Blvd, Suite D, Louisville, KY 40207 anytime between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. on August 6 to learn more about The Milk Bank and how to become a milk donor. Guests can enjoy snacks, drinks, door prizes, and The Milk Bank swag.

Bonnie Logsdon, owner of Bonnie Knows Breast and a board member of The Milk Bank, will be available to share details with anyone interested in becoming a lifesaving milk donor during the event. “As a Lactation Consultant with over 20 years of experience in the lactation space, I’ve seen first-hand the lifesaving impact pasteurized human donor milk makes in the lives of infants and their families,” said Logsdon. “I’m excited to host this event to educate the Louisville community about the importance of pasteurized donor human milk and the process of becoming a milk donor with The Milk Bank.”

The Milk Bank saw a 14% increase in total dispensation of pasteurized donor human milk in 2024. “The need for access to safe donor milk in the NICU continues to rise,” said Freedom Kolb, CEO of The Milk Bank. “With one in nine infants being born prematurely in Kentucky, we’re seeing more infants born too soon who require safe donor milk as not only nutrition, but medicine. This Milk Donor Drive will play a crucial role in sourcing new milk donors for The Milk Bank to ensure a stable supply of safe donor milk is available for those most fragile infants in the NICU.”

Approved milk donors of The Milk Bank can drop-off donations of excess breast during the event. Donated milk is kept frozen until it is transported from the Milk Depot to The Milk Bank, where it is processed, analyzed, pasteurized, and distributed to fragile infants across the state.

More information about the grand opening event can be found at themilkbank.org/events. Those interested in becoming a milk donor can pre-screened or ask questions on eligibility by contacting The Milk Bank at (317) 536-1670 or visiting themilkbank.org/donate-milk.
